Five-a-side Football helped start the camp activities with some fun |
As with most summer camps, the week started with a coach journey up the A1. On arrival at RAF Cranwell the cadets were shown to their accommodation for the, one of the new Air Cadet Regional Activity Centres. These centres are designed to not only provide accommodation for cadets, but also provide key training facilities in terms of flight simulation, IT suites, Air Traffic Control simulators and much more. There may be more on this later in the week.
The cadets sleep in single man rooms, with shared washing facilities, and separate areas of the accommodation for male and female cadets. It will be down the cadets to keep the accommodation block clean and tidy, which will be assessed. Each day the cadets rooms will be inspected along with their uniform. Lots of spit and polish, with a touch of ironing to help fill the time when the cadets are not enjoying some of the fun activities in store for them.
Each camp is headed up by an experienced RAF Volunteer Reserve (Training) Branch officer. For this week it is Squadron Leader Ratcliffe, Surrey Wing’s Sports Officer. He welcomed the cadets to the camp with a brief of the activities and what is expected of them.
The cadets are split into two “Flights” led by cadet Non-commissioned Officers. The two flights will compete for points throughout the week to win the coveted Best Flight prize. The competition starts with a familiarisation exercise around the station. The cadets are given a map and a series of questions designed to help them learn the station and where everything is. Then after dinner in the Junior Ranks Mess, the cadets have more briefings on both fire safety and security by the station fire and police services.
The day was rounded off with yet more competitions in the form of five-a-side football in the station Gym.
Check back soon to find out what the rest of the camp will bring.
